Walgreens

Walgreens Ads are delivered in the Sunday Honolulu Advertiser, and their sales run weekly from Sunday through Saturday.  Their ad is also available at the front entrance of their stores.

Register Rewards (RR)
Walgreens Register Rewards (RR) are Catalina coupons that will print up when you purchase a qualifying item.  The weekly Walgreens ad will identify which items will earn you register rewards.  Register rewards (RR) are dollar amounts that you can use toward your next Walgreens purchase.

For example the Walgreen's ad states, Buy 1 Schick Hydro Shave Gel at $2.99 and receive $2.99 in RRs, good on your NEXT purchase.  When you pay for your 1 Shave Gel, one RR will print up good for $2.99 off your next purchase.   Walgreens machines are programed to print only one RR coupon for one qualifying item.  So if you purchase 2 Shave Gels in one transaction, you will still only get 1 register reward, not 2.  If you want to purchase multiple amounts and receive the RR, you will need to separate the 2 items into 2 separate transactions.

You'll want to try and find coupons that will get your purchase price down below the amount of RR you will be getting back.  So say there is Shampoo that cost $2.50, and you will be getting a RR for $1.00.  Try to find a Manufacturer coupon that is $2.00 off that shampoo, which will give you $0.50 overage.  Basically you just got paid $0.50 to purchase that shampoo. (Let me point out that Walgreens is being completely refunded the $3 from manufacturers.  So you are using your Qs as a form of payment.  We couponers have to work hard to find coupons that match up with various sales.  In my opinion we are working hard and earning the savings we get from coupons.  Just as anyone else needs to work at their job to earn money.  Coupons are another form of payment just as CCards, Check, & Cash are.)

RRs come with an expiration date on them.  It is usually valid for 2 weeks.  For me it's not a problem because I try to use them up the same day that I get them.  I separate my transactions so that in the first transaction I receive the RRs and the next transaction I use the RRs.  That way I don't have to worry about them expiring before I get to use them.

When you redeem your RRs some restrictions do apply.
  1. The number of RRs that you use + the number of MQs has to be equal or less than the number of items you are purchasing.  For example, I have 5 RRs and 1 MQ that I want to use to pay for 4 items.  They will not allow me to use all 5 RRs and the 1 MQ because it exceeds the number of items I am buying.  But if I were to add 2 $0.50 packs of gum into my purchase, then I could use all 5 RRs and 1 MQ as planned because with the packs of gum I now have 6 items to purchase.
  2. You can never use a RR to get a RR for the same product - or for any other product made by the same manufacturer.                                                                                        Each RR has the manufacturer that is offering the catalina printed right on it.  For example, a $1 RR which I received after purchasing a bottle of Dawn has P&G or Procter & Gamble printed right on the front.  This means that P&G is the one providing Walgreens with my $1 savings.  Now when I redeem this P&G $1RR, I want to make sure that my transaction doesn't include any other P&G products that could earn me an additional RR.  The P&G $1 RR that I am redeeming will cancel or void my eligibility in receiving a second RR from P&G in this single transaction.  So make sure you are aware of what Manufacturer is sponsoring each RR.
  3. RRs cannot be used to purchase alcohol, tobacco, prescriptions, etc.
Because the RR program has these restrictions you really have to pay attention to what items you are purchasing in each transaction.  I will be posting the transactions that I do, just to help you through it.  But I have to say it took me a few times of errors before I really got the hang of all the restrictions.  Don't get discouraged.  Every time you make an error, its a learning experience.  Just remember to always be polite to the cashiers, a lot of times they don't know why the coupons don't go through themselves.  If you want to push it further, politely ask for a manager.  If  not simply ask the cashier to take the items off of your transaction...NEVER pay for something at regular price just because they already rang up the item, and the coupon didn't go through.

I personally always ask for a manager, because I know the restrictions well, and sometimes it is the systems fault.  I once had RRs printed up from the old Kalihi Bowl location, and I took them to Kaneohe Longs where they beeped when I tried to redeem them, and it didn't go through.  The cashier and the manager didn't know why it wouldn't go through, they figured that I couldn't use all those RRs.  I couldn't convince them otherwise, so I left my items and came back during another shift.  The same thing happened, but this time the new manager on duty listened to everything, and realized that the RRs were some how printed out wrong, so he entered it in manually to get me the RR $ amount off.

Walgreens Monthly Coupon Book
At the entrance to your Walgreens Store there is a stand which holds the Walgreens Weekly Ad, as well as a Walgreens Monthly Coupon Book.  This coupon book is filled with over $100 in savings which expire at the end of the month.  These are Walgreens coupons that can only be used at Walgreens.  At the beginning of each month they will put out the new month's coupon book.

Order of Handing Coupons to Cashier
Walgreens Coupon(WQ) first, Manufacturer Coupon(MQ) second, Register Rewards(RR) last
Always check, before you leave the store, and make sure that the RRs that you were expecting to get actually printed up.  My first time ever at Walgreens failed to produce the RR's that I was expecting.  But because I was new to Walgreens I figured it was my fault.  But then my mentor called me up later that day to warn me that those specific RRs were some how not entered into the system, and were failing to print up.  She told me to go back to the store with my items, and receipt, and kindly ask about the RRs that did not print up.  She reassured me that the Manager there was awesome, and is always willing to help.  I probably wouldn't have done it, but because it was for a $10 RR I went back.  Sure enough the manager was great, he was already aware of the problem, and he set me up with a form to fill out so I could receive that RR in the mail.  Yes, it took about 8 weeks to get to me, but when it finally got here, I had a month to use it before it expired...of course I didn't wait that long to use it.
